Explorer: The Mystery Boxes

I love graphic novels, so I couldn’t have been more excited when I saw that Kazu Kibuishi (favorite author of the Amulet series, and illustrator of the new Harry Potter covers) had put together a collection of seven short stories by a group of today’s hottest artists called Explorer: The Mystery Boxes.

And I wasn’t disappointed. In each of seven short graphic stories, a question is posed: “What’s in the box?” The artists’ answers range from out of this world to magical and full of mayhem, and from eerie to poignant.

I don’t want to spoil it for you, but I promise the imps of Rad Sechrist’s “The Butter Thief” will capture your heart, the hero of Dave Roman and Raina Telgemeier’s “Spring Cleaning” will have you digging through your own closet, and Johane Matte’s “The Whatzit” will make you laugh out loud!

Explorer is also great for reluctant readers. The short stories help break the collection into easily digestible parts, and the illustrations provide a great visual aid to understanding the stories. The brightly colored art is easy to follow and wildly imaginative. This book is perfect for kids from 8 to 108!

Fans of Smile, Drama, and the Amulet series will all find something to love within these pages. Check out Explorer: The Mystery Boxes in TAB June.

Author bio: Kristin Standley is the editorial assistant for the Arrow, TAB, Teens, and BookBeat.
